SERP volatility
Read how much the search results are moving for your tracked terms, so you can tell a real ranking change from routine turbulence.
Rankings move every day — sometimes because you changed something, and sometimes because the search results themselves are churning. SERP volatility measures how much the results are shifting for your tracked terms, so a two-position dip during a turbulent week reads very differently from the same dip on a calm one.
What you'll need
- A connected, verified site.
- Tracked keywords — volatility is calculated from the terms you already track.
How to read it
Open SERP volatility
In the left sidebar under Rank Tracker, open SERP volatility. You'll see an overall volatility score for your tracked set plus a trend over time.
Compare volatility with your own movement
A high volatility reading means the results are churning for everyone, not just you — treat individual ranking changes during that window with more caution. A low reading means the results are stable, so a change you see is more likely to be about your site specifically.
Act on the signal
When volatility spikes, wait for it to settle before drawing conclusions or reacting. When it's calm and you still drop, that's a stronger signal to investigate the page — start with an audit.
Plan availability
SERP volatility is available on paid plans and is calculated from your tracked keywords — the more of your important terms you track, the more representative the reading. Tracking keywords draws on your plan's rank-tracking allowance.
FAQs
Is high volatility bad? Not on its own. It just means the results are unstable right now. It's context for interpreting your own ranking changes, not a problem to fix.
Why is my volatility score low but my rankings still moved? That's the most actionable case: the results are stable, so a change is more likely specific to your site. Look at the affected page's audit and content.
Does tracking more keywords cost more? Tracking keywords uses your plan's rank-tracking allowance. See Plans & credits.
